The Prison Learning Initiative hosts a Correcting the Narrative event

PLI Event Correcting the NarrativeThe Prison Learning Initiative (PLI) at Coe College will host a Correcting the Narrative event on Thursday, November 14 at 7:00 PM in Kesler Auditorium on the first floor of Hickok Hall on Coe’s campus. It is free and open to the public.

Correcting the Narrative is a public awareness, story-telling campaign that challenges common beliefs and misperceptions about people who have been involved in the criminal legal system. A screening of short videos highlighting the successes and the humanity of people who have been in prison will be followed by a panel discussion. The discussion will be facilitated by Shannon Ross, founder of The Community. Panelists will include Mike Cervantes, director of Living Beyond the Bars, an Iowa non-profit offering reentry assistance for those leaving prison, and Geneva Williams ‘02 with the Tama County Prosecutor’s Office.

The Prison Learning Initiative will sponsor the event in conjunction with The Community, a non-profit organization based in Wisconsin that provides support for people with criminal records and addresses public perceptions through their Correcting the Narrative project.

On campus, the PLI offers a range of hands-on experiences for Coe campus and community members to learn about the impacts of incarceration and the carceral system.
