Kailey Ann Blunk ’22 is a first-year creative writing and communications major at Coe College. During the fifth grade, Blunk begrudgingly began writing. She was forced by her teacher to enter a short story competition. Ultimately she won first place, and her love of writing was born. Throughout the last decade, Blunk honed her writing style and began sharing her life experiences via the written word. Until recently, her memoirs remained largely unread. Now they have been published and can be purchased through Amazon.

Throughout a six-month relationship, Blunk kept a collection of poetry and prose sharing the emotional highs of falling in love and the scars of heartbreak that finally ensued. Knowing she wasn’t comfortable expressing herself face-to-face, Blunk’s letters gave her a way to express herself without vulnerability.

Blunk amassed her collection of poems and prose on Wattpad — an online social storytelling platform. She was approached about publishing her poems but felt they were too personal. As time went on, she thought more about sharing her experience. Ultimately, she chose to publish her collection through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing under the title “hurricane him.”

A second book is in the works. She believes it will take several years to complete. Currently, she is focused on earning her bachelor's degree at Coe College. “Coe was the one small school that fit me perfectly,” Blunk said. Once she arrived on campus, she immediately got involved with Coe’s Writing Center and two on-campus publications — Colere and the Coe Review.

Following graduation, Blunk plans to work in publishing — perhaps at a literary magazine or a book press. For now, she’s content to further her studies and continue her literary works. Coe is making it possible. Blunk is making it happen.
