Coe College hosts memorial event in honor of Dr. W. Kent Herron; Nearly 4 million dollar gift announced

Kent “Doc” Herron, a beloved faculty member whose generosity continues to impact the institution. Over 500 alumni and friends returned to Coe’s campus to remember a life well lived and the enduring contributions of a devoted faculty member and mentor whose dedication to Coe remained steadfast for 56 years.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement of a remarkable gift — a nearly $4 million gift from Dr. Herron’s estate, which will endow a faculty chair and advance Coe’s academic mission through scholarships. With this gift, the Coe professor’s legacy will continue to inspire and support students, faculty and staff for many years to come.

Coe College President David Hayes ’93 expressed deep gratitude for the generous contribution. “This extraordinary gift is a testament to Doc’s unwavering commitment to education and the Coe College community. We are honored to celebrate Kent’s life at Coe and recognize the profound impact he had and will continue to have on our College. This donation will be transformative for our students, faculty and generations to come.”

A fierce supporter of Coe football, Dr. Herron could be seen every home game cheering on the Kohawks from his “spot” on the sidelines. As part of an ongoing fundraising project for new turf at K. Raymond Clark Field, Coe will honor him with a permanent marker on the turf declaring “Doc’s Spot.” To ensure Doc’s legendary fandom is recognized on the field, Kohawks will need to keep coming together to raise the $600,000+ for the state-of-the-art turf.

The turf project will build on Coe’s positive fundraising momentum this fiscal year. With the support of generous alumni, faculty, staff and community partners, the college has raised over $7 million including Dr. Herron’s gift since July 1, 2024, ensuring continued excellence in academics, co-curricular programs, scholarships and campus development.
