Coe College hosting Human Rights Research Conference
This year’s Iowa Human Rights Research Conference will be hosted at Coe College on Saturday, April 22 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. An annual event in its eighth year, the Iowa Human Rights Research Conference showcases undergraduate, graduate and professional students’ research on a range of human rights issues. The conference is organized each year by the Iowa Network of Human Rights Academics.
Students from colleges and universities across Iowa present papers, posters and creative projects that address a wide range of human rights topics. Attendees learn about and discuss current research on human rights with peers and experts. Student presenters have an unparalleled opportunity for conversation and networking with faculty across the state.
Two Coe alumni, Piper Cooper ’22 and Paige Waskow ’22, presented papers at last year’s conference.
“I appreciated the opportunity to learn about the projects of other undergraduate students in the midwest while also sharing mine. What stood out to me about the conference was that it included a diverse range of projects from poetry to research all under the umbrella of social justice and equity,” said Waskow.
Cooper’s paper, “Rural and Urban Disparities in Health Care Policy” and Waskow’s paper, “Environmental Racism and the United States Federal Policy,” emerged from research under the supervision of Joan and Abbott Lipsky Professor of Political Science Kim Lanegran.
“The conference provides superb training for graduate school as participants present and answer questions about their individual academic research. This is one reason why Coe's two 2022 attendees did the hard work necessary to be part of the event. One went immediately on to graduate school and the other headed into the workforce first. Additionally, attendees are exposed to the rich breadth of the field of human rights work and scholarship by the range of the research presented,” said Lanegran.
Advance registration is required. Program details and registration information are available at the conference website.
This year’s Iowa Human Rights Research Conference is presented at Coe in conjunction with Coe’s Prison Learning Initiative which provides a range of hands-on, high-impact experiences for our students and campus community members to learn about and get involved with the criminal legal system in Iowa and the Midwest.
